22 countries ... 11 months...

The plan is to go through France and Italy, into Sicily and across into Africa at Tunisia. From there we will head east, across Libya and Egypt, before heading south again down the east coast of Africa.

We have decided to take the easy route down Africa avoiding the often more difficult West coast countries, although many argue are they actually friendlier and more of a truly "African" experience... maybe next time! For now, we are happy to potter down through all the nice countries that people go on dream holidays to - Libya, Sudan and Ethiopia aside perhaps. Due to the expense and hassle of getting a visa for Libya (see prep page), many overlanders decide instead to go through Turkey, Syria, Jordan and into Africa via Egypt. However, we seem to have found a good guide that has made the Libya visa process relatively painless... famous last words, watch this space!

The map below shows the rough proposed route in blue which (hopefully, if Ness' IT skills are up to it .... which she'll obviously blame on lack of internet facilities if not...) we will update with markers in red as we go with where we are so you can see the actual route taken. We expect on a big scale i.e. country wise, the actual route will stay about the same but the detail of where we end up in each country and the order of the countries we visit when we get to southern Africa will change as we have left our plans as flexible as possible at the outset.
